How to combine style and workwear?

Fashion and work wear aren't opposing ideas. When you pick out stylish outfits for your work wardrobe, you can dress to impress every day with a minimum of fuss.

Setting a uniform for your employees doesn't have to mean cramping their style either – as long as you choose fashionable workwear that flatters their figures and that they'll actually want to wear.

Corporate uniforms make it easier for everyone in your company to focus on their jobs, without having to worry about making the right impression. When you choose stylish workwear, you can be sure that impression will be a good one!

Dress for success

It doesn't matter whether you own the company, work for the company or you're self-employed – everyone can benefit from a uniform to make their professional lives easier.

Many of the world's most successful people have embraced uniforms that reflect their sense of style and leave them free to focus on what's important. Apple founder Steve Jobs famously wore a black turtleneck and jeans, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg owns only grey T-shirts, and even Barack Obama limits his options to two suits.

At a public Q&A in 2015, Mark Zuckerberg was asked about his wardrobe. He explained:

"I really want to clear my life to make it so that I have to make as few decisions as possible about anything except how to best serve this community."

On a similar note, President Obama told Vanity Fair:

"You'll see I wear only gray or blue suits. I'm trying to pare down decisions. I don't want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make."

Save time and avoid anxiety

If you're conscious of how your outfit reflects on you, choosing the right clothes to wear every day can be a burden. Not to mention taking valuable time out of your morning, or even the evening before.

There's also the financial cost of constantly updating your work wardrobe to keep up with the latest fashion trends, buying clothing which may only have a brief lifespan before it starts to look outdated.  Establishing a uniform sweeps away all of these problems, reducing stress and anxiety and giving you back your valuable free time.

What to look for in stylish workwear

What makes a fashionable uniform? While your decisions will be informed by your personal taste, you can make sure you're choosing outfits that are both stylish and practical for yourself or your employees by following a few simple guidelines.

  • Quality – Even if you're trying to save money, don't cut corners on quality fabrics. Whether your workwear is made from 100% cotton or poly blends, it needs to be comfortable to wear all day.
  • Variety – Some uniforms are as simple as a top and pants, but if you expand to include seasonal options like winter jackets and sleeveless summer shirts, you can make sure your staff are comfortable all year round.
  • Colour – Unless you're incorporating your brand colours, your uniform should follow established colour schemes to avoid looking out of place or becoming dated when trendy colours go out of fashion.
  • Longevity – You probably want your uniform to last, so it's wise to avoid jumping on current trends in colours and styles that could end up looking unfashionable or even embarrassing in the future. Aim for a lifespan of at least two to three years.
